Kerala Lottery Prize Claim Process Explained: A Winners Handbook

Won a prize? Congratulations! Here is a detailed breakdown of how to claim your Kerala Lottery winnings, from small amounts to the jackpot.

Winning a lottery prize is an exhilarating moment, but the process of claiming it can be confusing. The claiming procedure depends entirely on the prize amount. Follow this guide to ensure your winnings reach your bank account smoothly.

Documents Required

Before heading to any office, ensure you have the following documents ready:

  • The original winning ticket: Ensure it is intact and not torn.
  • Self-attested copy of the ticket: Sign the back of the ticket and on the copy.
  • Passport-sized photographs: Usually two recent photos (attested by a Gazetted Officer).
  • Identity Proof: PAN Card (mandatory for tax purposes), Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, or Passport.
  • Bank Account Details: A cancelled cheque leaf or passbook copy.
  • Claim Application Form: Available at the District Lottery Office or downloadable online.

Where to Claim Your Prize

1. Prizes up to ₹5,000

Convenience is key here. You can claim these amounts from any authorized lottery agent or stall in Kerala. Most agents will deduct the ticket cost for the next draw or a small commission and pay you cash immediately.

2. Prizes from ₹5,001 to ₹1 Lakh

These amounts must be claimed from the District Lottery Office. You need to submit your ticket and basic ID proof. The amount is usually credited to your bank account or given as a cheque.

3. Prizes form ₹1 Lakh to ₹20 Lakhs

For these substantial amounts, you must visit the Directorate of State Lotteries in Thiruvananthapuram or the Regional Deputy Directorate. The verification process is stricter, involving document authentication.

4. Prizes Above ₹20 Lakhs (Jackpots)

Jackpot winners (like the First and Second prizes of major draws) must submit their claim directly to the Director of State Lotteries at the headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram. Given the high value, it is advisable to surrender the ticket through a nationalized bank for added security.

Tax Dedcutions

As per the Income Tax Act (Section 194B), winnings from lotteries are subject to a flat 30% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) if the prize money exceeds ₹10,000. Additionally, applicable Health and Education Cess (usually 4%) is levied on the tax amount.

Example: If you win ₹1 Crore, the TDS will be approximately ₹31.2 Lakhs. You will receive the remaining balance.

Important Timelines

The validity of a winning ticket is 30 days from the date of the draw. If you fail to claim within this period, you may need special permission from the Director, which is granted only in exceptional cases. Claims made after 90 days are generally rejected.
